Medieval Lviv
In XIV century, new
city of stone with large defensive walls and
traditional for the european medieval cities buildings was built. Taking into
account the multinationality of Lviv inhabitants, each community was
given its territory. That’s how districts (so called ‘dilnytsi’) – territories
for the compact inhabitation of Orthodox, Catholics, Virmenians and Jews – were
formed. Each district has its peculiar beauty and its own sacral places.
Principal Lviv
Principal Lviv was built of wood. Built on the hill and fenced castle and roundabout settlements were the very centre, large city developed from. Vysokyi castle, founded on the Knyazha (Prince) mound, became the citadel of the city as well as one of its symbols. The city has been famous for a great number of churches since ancient times. Despite numerous Ukrainian churches, through the prince times there were also two Catholic and three Armenian temples.
